NASCAR has suspended Kurt Busch

NASCAR has suspended Kurt Busch through June 13, which includes this week's Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway, after video of the driver's tirade toward a reporter went viral

In a two-paragraph release announcing the decision, the sanctioning body also said Busch would be placed on probation through the end of the year.

The suspension stemmed from Busch's comments toward Sporting News reporter Bob Pockrass following Saturday's Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway. Busch had been asked about racing hard against Justin Allgaier and whether being on probation caused him to exercise on-track restraint.

Busch responded, "It refrains me from not beating the (expletive) out of you right now, because you ask me stupid questions. But since I'm on probation, I suppose that that's improper to say as well."

In a statement released through his Phoenix Racing team, Busch said, "I accept NASCAR's decision. I put them in a box. They had to take action, and it's my fault for putting them in this position. I apologize for the comments I made to Bob Pockrass."

Busch was already on probation for his actions May 12 at Darlington Raceway, where he did a burnout through Ryan Newman's pit box and got into a confrontation with crewmembers after the race.

NASCAR officials met Monday afternoon and came to the decision.

"It was something that we considered very carefully before coming to a decision like this," spokesman Kerry Tharp told USA TODAY Sports. "After we reviewed the latest incident, and based upon the fact that he was on probation from a violation that occurred at Darlington last month, we were in consensus that the suspension was warranted."

Busch, the 2004 Cup champion, will miss a race for the first time in NASCAR's premier series since Roush Fenway Racing ended its relationship with him with two races to go in 2005 after Busch was charged with reckless driving. (The team famously said it was "officially retiring as Kurt Busch's apologists.")

Eddie Gossage, president of Texas Motor Speedway and a respected voice in motor sports, said he understands the suspension ("You can't threaten other people," he said) but Busch's actions continue to surprise.

"Every experience I've ever had with Kurt Busch has been the utmost professional, first-class. I truly mean that," Gossage said. "I just … I don't know where all this comes from. It's just sad. One of the most exciting drivers to come along in this generation, and I hope he's not blowing it."

Larry McReynolds, who will join TNT as it takes over Cup broadcasts for the next six weeks, joined the chorus of those wanting Busch to control his emotions.

"He has a championship and 24 Sprint Cup Series wins," McReynolds said on Speed's NASCAR Race Hub. "He alone is holding his career in the palm of his hands, and he's absolutely throwing it away. It makes me want to shake him and say, 'Kurt, please take a look at what you're doing.'"

Busch is ranked 26th in the Cup standings while driving the No. 51 Chevrolet for team owner James Finch's single-car team, which welcomed Busch after his fall from grace at Penske Racing in the offseason. One of the final straws at Penske was Busch's verbal tirade toward ESPN reporter Jerry Punch at the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Of the Punch incident factoring into the decision, Tharp said, "There are many factors that we consider when coming to a decision like this."

Busch's younger brother, Kyle, had been the most recent driver to be parked for a Cup race by NASCAR after he intentionally wrecked Ron Hornaday Jr. under caution during a Camping World Truck Series race at Texas Motor Speedway in November.

Other one-race parkings by NASCAR: Robby Gordon at Pocono in 2007 (for ignoring black flag in Nationwide race in Montreal the day before); Jimmy Spencer at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2003 (one race, for hitting Kurt Busch through his window at Michigan International Speedway); and Kevin Harvick at Martinsville Speedway in 2002 (for aggressive driving in the trucks race one day before).

Spencer, a Speed analyst, had strong words for his formal rival.

"Kurt Busch's suspension is long overdue, and that is coming from someone who learned his lesson after sitting out a race for punching him a few years ago," Spencer said. "Kurt has been given plenty of chances to right his wrongs and put himself back on the right path, but he has failed to take advantage of any of those opportunities.

"Speaking from experience, I can say that my suspension was extremely upsetting to me, but it made me a better person off the track. That's what Kurt needs now, and I hope this helps him. It seems to have straightened his little brother, Kyle, out, and I hope the same is true for Kurt."

"NASCAR has suspended driver Kurt Busch until June 13 of this year and extended his NASCAR probation until Dec. 31 for his actions following the NASCAR Nationwide Series race June 2 at Dover International Speedway.

"Kurt Busch violated Section 12-1 (Actions detrimental to stock car racing; violation of probation; verbal abuse to a media member) of the 2012 NASCAR Rule Book. Kurt Busch had previously been placed on NASCAR probation May 15 for his actions during the May 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Darlington Raceway. That probation was originally scheduled to end July 25 but has now been extended through the end of this year."

Selection order for 2012 Draft announced

The rules dictating how teams can go about signing Draft picks may be much different thanks to the most recent collective bargaining agreement, but how things will operate during the 2012 First-Year Player Draft remains largely the same.
Major League Baseball released the Draft order for the event on Tuesday, officially putting the Astros on the clock with the first pick. It is the third time Houston has had the No. 1 overall selection, having done so in 1976 and '92. Floyd Bannister and Phil Nevin went on to be quality Major Leaguers, so the Astros will hope history can repeat itself in June.
Some of the names being mentioned as potential top picks are such college pitchers as Stanford's Mark Appel, LSU's Kevin Gausman, the University of San Francisco's Kyle Zimmer and Texas A&M's Michael Wacha; Florida catcher Mike Zunino; and Georgia high school outfielder Byron Buxton. MTV movie awards

The Hunger Games won four MTV Movie Awards on yesterday but a Twilight film picked up the best movie honour for the fourth straight year in what proved to be a tame evening at the typically outrageous awards show.

Post-apocalyptic film The Hunger Games nabbed MTV's golden popcorn trophies for best male performance by Josh Hutcherson, best female performance by Jennifer Lawrence, best transformation by Elizabeth Banks and best fight.

The movie of the year award, voted for by fans online throughout the show, went to vampire romance The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, beating out The Hunger Games and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Female-led comedy Bridesmaids picked up two awards for best comedic performance by Melissa McCarthy and best gut-wrenching performance for its stomach-turning food poisoning scene, while the final installment of the Harry Potter franchise won for best cast and best hero.

Host Russell Brand, known for raunchy humour, launched into jokes about his short-lived marriage to singer Katy Perry, thanking Kim Kardashian for "taking the pressure off me" due to her brief marriage to basketball player Kris Humphries and joking about keeping his "eyes peeled" for a new wife.

His barbs also were directed at pop star Justin Bieber, Charlie Sheen, John Travolta, Kanye West and Shame actor Michael Fassbender for "profiting from sex addiction".

The Descendants star Shailene Woodley picked up the breakthrough performance award. Spider-Man actress Emma Stone was given the trailblazer trophy and Johnny Depp was honoured with the generation award for a career spanning three decades.

"It's like the get-out-of-the-business award basically, when you've done too much ... There's obviously something wrong with me," Depp joked in his acceptance speech.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean actor showed off his guitar skills, joining rockers The Black Keys for their hit singles Gold On The Ceiling and Lonely Boy.

In some of the night's more irreverent categories, Jennifer Aniston picked up the best on-screen dirtbag award for her role as a foul-mouthed, blackmailing dentist in Horrible Bosses.

The best kiss trophy was again given to Twilight leads Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, who have won for their steamy on-screen clinches for the past three years.

Despite its billing an outrageous event, the show seemed more tame than in previous years with little foul language or onstage antics. Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello did some spicing up with a near strip tease. The trio stars in an upcoming film, Magic Mike, about male strippers.

Notable moments came from Batman star Christian Bale, who gave an emotional introduction to an exclusive trailer for the upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises, after footage of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker character was shown from the second installment of the Christopher Nolan Batman franchise.

Music, the foundation of MTV, played a key role throughout the show with first-ever house DJ, Martin Solveig, providing movie score mash-ups from Jaws, Pulp Fiction and Drive between awards.

TV host Richard Dawson dies at 79

Richard Dawson, the wisecracking British entertainer who was among the schemers in the 1960s sitcom Hogan's Heroes and a decade later began kissing thousands of female contestants as host of the game show Family Feud has died. He was 79.

Dawson, also known to TV fans as the Cockney POW Cpl. Peter Newkirk on Hogan's Heroes, died Saturday night from complications related to esophageal cancer at Ronald Reagan Memorial hospital, his son Gary said.

The game show, which initially ran from 1976 to 1985, pitted families who tried to guess the most popular answers to poll questions such as 'What do people give up when they go on a diet?'

Dawson won a daytime Emmy Award in 1978 as best game show host. Tom Shales of The Washington Post called him 'the fastest, brightest and most beguilingly caustic interlocutor since the late great Groucho bantered and parried on You Be Your Life. The show was so popular it was released as both daytime and syndicated evening versions.

He was known for kissing each woman contestant, and at the time the show bowed out in 1985, executive producer Howard Felsher estimated that Dawson had kissed 'somewhere in the vicinity of 20,000.'

Saturday Night Live mocked him in the 1970s, with Bill Murray portraying him as leering and nasty, even slapping one contestant (John Belushi) for getting too fresh.

The British-born actor already had gained fame as the fast-talking Newkirk in Hogan's Heroes, the CBS comedy about prisoners in a Nazi POW camp who hoodwink their captors and run the place themselves.

Despite its unlikely premise, the show made the ratings top 10 in its first season, 1965-66, and ran until 1971.

Both Hogan's Heroes and Family Feud have had a second life in recent years, the former on DVD reissues and the latter on GSN, formerly known as the Game Show Network.

On Dawson's last Family Feud in 1985, the studio audience honored him with a standing ovation, and he responded: 'Please sit down. I have to do at least 30 minutes of fun and laughter and you make me want to cry.'

'I've had the most incredible luck in my career,' he told viewers.

'I never dreamed I would have a job in which so many people could touch me and I could touch them,' he said. That triggered an unexpected laugh.

Producers brought out The New Family Feud, starring comedian Ray Combs, in 1988. Six years later, Dawson replaced Combs at the helm, but that lasted only one season.

According to the Internet Movie Database, Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm in 1932 in Gosport, England. His first wife was actress Diana Dors, the blond bombshell who was Britain's answer to Marilyn Monroe.

Miss Rhode Island wins Miss USA crown

Miss Rhode Island, Olivia Culpo, won the title of Miss USA 2012 on Sunday night, beating a field of 50 high-heeled contestants at the pageant held in Las Vegas.

Wearing a purple, flowing gown, the 20-year-old Boston University sophomore looked at ease in the final rounds of competition, dancing alongside singer Akon during his live performance with the five finalists.

A cellist for 13 years, Culpo emphasized the importance of music education. She has performed at Boston Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The first runner-up was Miss Maryland, Nana Meriwhether. The remaining three finalists were Miss Ohio, Audrey Bolte; Miss Nevada, Jade Kelsall; and Miss Georgia, Jasmyn "Jazz" Wilkins.

For the first time, viewers were able to ask Miss USA contestants a question via Twitter during the show. The pageant was broadcast live from Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Contestants representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia competed in swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions. Miss USA 2011, Alyssa Campanella, crowned the winner.

This year's panel of celebrity judges included chef Cat Cora; talk-show host and "Celebrity Apprentice" winner Arsenio Hall; musician Joe Jonas; actress Marilu Henner; television personality Rob Kardashian; Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe 2008; George Kotsiopoulous, co-host of E!'s "Fashion Police"; and Ali Fedotowsky, formerly of "The Bachelorette."

Culpo will represent the United States in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant.

Montreal police backtrack on Magnotta-Homolka connection

The search for the most wanted man in Canada has led police overseas as they believe Luka Rocco Magnotta fled to another continent before anyone suspected him of murder.

The 29-year-old faces a first-degree murder charge alleging he killed a man whose torso was discovered Tuesday in a suitcase behind the apartment building, where Magnotta lived for four months before he disappeared.

The Montreal police believe Magnotta, an actor in gay pornographic videos, killed the man, whose remains have yet to be officially identified, on May 25, inside his tiny second-floor apartment.

The homicide only came to light four days later.

Police believe there is a link between the man Magnotta allegedly killed and dismembered body parts that were mailed to Ottawa. Packages containing body parts arrived Tuesday, coincidentally, around the same time a janitor discovered the torso inside a discarded suitcase in Montreal.

One package arrived at the federal Conservative Party's headquarters and another, destined for the Liberal Party, was intercepted.

Montreal police Commander Ian Lafrenirre said investigators believe Magnotta managed to leave Canada and is now "in another continent."

An Ottawa police source said Magnotta took a flight May 25 from Canada to Paris. Magnotta's possible presence in France has raised concern in the French media, with France Soir warning that "l'acteur porno" could be in that country.

Meanwhile, a woman who answered the phone at the home of a relative of Magnotta's in Ontario Thursday afternoon declined to comment. An arrest warrant issued by Interpol Thursday lists Magnotta's birthplace as Scarborough, Ont.

Earlier, one of Magnotta's relatives said they spent Wednesday night close to the phone in case the high-profile fugitive calls.

"He hurt us when he was younger and we haven't been in contact with him in a while," said the relative. "We heard about all of this on the news, and then the police called and asked us to let them know if he calls us."

A first-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole before 25 years.

According to the warrant made public at the Montreal courthouse Thursday, Magnotta is also charged with committing an "indignity to the body of the human remains (of) an unknown person." The second charge carries a maximum sentence of five years.

The same warrant revealed Magnotta was initially accused of second-degree murder, a lesser charge which still carries a life sentence but offers more flexibility to a judge when determining parole eligibility. Lafreniere said the warrant charging Magnotta with second-degree murder was issued early in the investigation, while investigators were still at the murder scene. He said a prosecutor later decided to upgrade the charge to first-degree murder after she was shown a disturbing video depicting a man, believed to be Magnotta, committing indignities to a body.

The graphic video was posted to a website and has been viewed by many on the Internet.

"The video changes everything," Lafreniere said of why the charge was altered even before the first arrest warrant was made public.

The warrant charges Magnotta with causing the death "of an unknown person."

Magnotta has an extensive online profile and significant Internet notoriety earned by videos in which he tortures and kills kittens.

It is very unusual for indictments to not identify the victims of a homicide. But, Lafreniere explained, the victim in this case has yet to be identified officially even though investigators believe they know who he was. He said one reason why the remains have yet to be officially identified is because some parts of the body have yet to be located. Lafreniere also said investigators have had difficulty reaching the victim's family as they live outside of Canada.

Earlier this week, residents of the apartment building where Magnotta lived were shown a photo of a man the police believe was the victim. They described him as an Asian man in his '30s.

Magnotta does not have a criminal record in Quebec provincial court or in Montreal municipal court. But on Thursday, the Ottawa Citizen learned that in 2004, Magnotta was charged, under the name Eric Clinton Newman, his name at birth, with defrauding numerous large retail chains, including Sears Canada Inc., the Brick and 2001 Audio Video. He was also accused of stealing $17,000 from a woman and sexually assaulting her.

He was sentenced to a nine-month conditional sentence and put on probation for 12 months in 2005 after convictions for three counts of fraud and personate with intent in Toronto.

In 2004, a charge of fraud, four counts of impersonating an authority, six counts of possession of property obtained by crime and a single count of sex assault were all withdrawn.

His bail conditions were extensive and included an order to stay away from a theft victim. The conditions also prohibited him from owning or using any computers, accessing the Internet and email and possessing "any 35mm cameras, digital cameras or video cameras."

Montreal police also backtracked Thursday on claims they made this week that Magnotta had dated Karla Homolka, one of Canada's most notorious sex killers.

Police officials clarified Thursday that they were aware of the many rumours posted on the Internet, but had no proof to substantiate those stories. In 2007, Magnotta came forward to news media in 2007 to deny that he had dated her, although many at the time suggested he was the one who started the rumours, to gain attention.
